The Sunday before Martin Luther King Day, the Hug Chicago Benefit Concert was the perfect kick off. The "Hug Chicago" campaign is a group that wants to change Chicago's tarnished image of gun violence one hug at a time. The Chicago four member group, Foster and Jack, encourage through their music to help curb Chicago's image. With sounds provided by DJ Doug, DJ Inc and DJ J. Imani, Manny Treo hosting and special performances by Dion Jetson, Elite Society, Naledge Evans, Paige Gillian, GLC, Brill etc. the event was surely the start towards making positive change.
What is The #HugChallenge?
Chicago based artists Foster & Jack will challenge all Chicago Hip Hop artists to participate in a national unification campaign. The campaign will kick off in Chicago. The campaign will ask for a simple act of kindness. Hug a young black male.
#HugChicago: The hug will serve as a mustard seed (small act of faith) for young black males between 13-21 years of age. We want to hug them and show them love.
Their goal is to Hug 100,000 young black males and raise the money with donations from 5 to 50 dollars. The challenge has a fundraising goal of $125,000.00 that will seed programs at city wide organizations that serve young men.
The Ancillary Goal is to spark the dialogue, the conversation, the thinking, the discussion…to raise awareness of social and emotional disconnect (lack of love) with young black males… provide solutions for societal disconnects.
We truly enjoyed ourselves to hear great music from Chicago artists that all have great messages. What stuck out particularly to us, was the knowledge given to us by our good friend GLC. He is not only a Chicago Legend but an educator of the "Ism", speaking nothing but truth and reality. it's important for our people to understand whats happening in our own backyards.
Not only, was the event about being educated and finding a solution to the issues in Chicago, it was also lots of fun, we played trivia games as well. The Promontory sponsored a big knot of loot, the host asked a question, if you answered correctly. he peeled off the top of the money and gave it to you. It was up to you whether you chose to keep the money or DONATE it to the cause. Happy to say most people donated their winnings and added to it right out of their pocket.
